A typical day at Spacehouse

Where it began

It all began with a trip to the Indian Himalayas in 1998. It was going to be a seven-day trip, but the owner of today’s Spacehouse ended up staying seven years. She left the Himalayas in 2005 to explore the Alps, the Andes and the Atlas. But none matched the mountains of the Himalayas. Unable to forget the magnificence and the effects the Himalayas had on her, she returned in 2008, and with all her savings at the time, help from family and friends, she purchased the acre of forest land on which the house now stands.

“The only thought at the time was - I don’t know where I want to live, but I know where I want to die - and that’s in the lap of the Himalayas with possibly the best view for many lifetimes ahead.”

Spacehouse has taken 15 years to develop, endless days of conceiving and countless nights of dreaming. It was not in the owner’s expectation, but over the course of these years, her vision for the house was changing, and she realised that this has been her own pilgrimage. In 2021, she made a decisive change of plan. The purpose of Spacehouse will no longer just be a private residence, it will also be a space for cultivating the next generation of creative thinkers and makers by raising their awareness of self and surroundings. She will open it up to others seeking creative enlightenment through discovery.
