Field Notes

A living collection of thoughts and fragments from Spacehouse. Unfinished prototypes, short essays, zines, recipes, soundtracks and small sparks of inspiration shared by our residents. These are glimpses into work in progress and moments shaped by this place.

The Ikebana zine titled ‘Not a Flower Arrangement’ shows the temporary creations of artist Eri Iwase from Japan using found materials in the Himalayan landscapes. The zine shows Eri’s philosophy of Ikebana in action - as a process for making work. A practice of seeing, touching, and rediscovering nature. Published August 2025. 28 pages. Download PDF. A Himalayan House Prototype _ Shubhra Raje

An affordable housing model designed by architect Shubhra Raje for the Himalayan terrain. Earthquake-resistant, thermally insulated, built with locally available skills and materials. The first prototype built in 2025 served as staff quarters for Spacehouse Himalayas.

A 45 second video by artist Rajaram Naik created during his residency (2024). ‘The Wind Remembers The Path I forget’ captures the nocturnal spirit of the Himalayan landscapes.

A handpainted limited postcard series created by artist Purin Phaninchpant during his residency (2024) and gifted to fellow artists in residence. Artist Swapnaa Tamhane sent herself a postcard from Spacehouse Himalayas that was posted from the local post office (a 2 km walk) to her studio in Montreal, Canada.

Recipe for Himalayan Ink

South African artist Hannelie Coetzee created a special ink for her hand drawings from the Himalayan Oak leaves during her residency (2025) with guidance from Indian artist Nidhi Khurana.

Before It Fades Away _ Atmos

Visual artist Abhishek Khedekar captures his experience of visiting the Himalayan village of Peora during his residency (2024).

Space architect Barbara Imhoff captures a day in the Himalayan skies showing moving clouds (2024).

Photographer Shashank Peshawaria brings his lens to understanding the changing agrarian landscapes and their socio-economic impacts in the Kumaon region.

‘The Great Wheel of Dharma’ is the first audio and video sequence assembled by Elsa and Vahan Soghomonian during their residency at Spacehouse. The sounds were recorded at the Tibetan Monastery of Nainital, and the video was filmed from a school during Independence day. The footage is captured from the unique perspective of a truck tire transformed into a prayer wheel. The kaleidoscopic element comes from traveling through the jungle that houses the residency. These "tunnels" are still under construction, but they will soon take us from one world to another.
